New In-Camera Signature Solution Attaches Digital Certificate to Photos at the Point of Capture to Certify Legitimacy
Sony Electronics today announced the completion of a second round of testing with the Associated Press for Sony’s in-camera authenticity technology. This in-camera digital signature enables the construction of a birth certificate for photos, authenticating the content’s origin.
Sony’s authenticity technology provides a machine-based digital signature, removing the opportunity for undetected manipulation at the start. The digital signature is made inside the camera at the moment of capture in the hardware chipset. This security feature is aimed at professionals wanting to safeguard the authenticity of their content and provides an extra layer of security to aid news agencies in their fight against falsified imagery.
“While the rapid evolution of generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) brings new possibilities for creative expression, it has also led to growing concern about the impact of altered or manipulated imagery in journalism,” says Neal Manowitz, President and COO of Sony Electronics. “The dissemination of false information and images has real world social impact that brings harm not only to our photojournalist and news agency partners, but to society as a whole. We care deeply about this challenge and are committed to using our resources to help solve it. Through Sony’s work on the steering committee for C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), we have helped set the current industry standard for the tracking of editing and manipulation of imagery. Additionally, our in-camera authenticity technology has shown valuable results, and we will continue to push its development towards a wider release.”
“Fake and manipulated images are a major concern for news organizations. Not only do they contribute to mis- and disinformation but ultimately, they erode the public’s trust in factual, accurate imagery,” said David Ake, AP Director of Photography. “We are proud to be working alongside Sony Electronics to create an authentication solution that can help combat this problem.”
Sony and AP’s most recent field test was completed during October of 2023. In this month-long test, both capture authentication and workflow process were evaluated. To accomplish this, Sony partnered with Camera Bits – the company behind the industry standard workflow tool, Photo Mechanic. Alongside Sony and AP, Camera Bits created technology in Photo Mechanic that preserves the camera’s digital signature all the way through the metadata editing process.
“We appreciate the significant challenge that manipulated imagery poses for our partners, and we are highly motivated to play a role in helping solve it,” says Dennis Walker, President and Founder of Camera Bits. “Photo Mechanic has been used by the photojournalism industry for 25 years and continues to evolve as the industry introduces new technology. We are committed to ensuring Photo Mechanic remains a trusted and authentic workflow solution.”
Sony’s new in-camera signature and C2PA authentication is planned for release in a firmware update in the newly announced Alpha 9 III, Alpha 1, and Alpha 7S III in the Spring of 2024.
Capture dynamic moments such as sports scenes with high agility and supreme image quality
Sony is happy to announce the release of the world’s lightest 300 mm telephoto prime lens, the G MasterTM FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS, as well as a 35 mm full-frame αTM (AlphaTM) E-mount lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8 (product name SEL300F28GM).
This lens offers the supreme detailing which is the hallmark of G master as well as high-speed, high-precision AF (autofocus) performance. In addition, the lightweight design of approximately 1470g (excluding tripod mount) and excellent weight balance allows you to capture sharp, dynamic and decisive moments such as those of fast-moving sports or agile animals with handheld shooting. Paired with the Alpha 9 III that is simultaneously announced, high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking up to 120 frames per second is possible. Even subjects with complex and diversified movements can be tracked with high precision. It is an ideal match for lightweight camera bodies by reducing the load on the photographer, minimising fatigue during long handheld shooting sessions. It is also compatible with an optional teleconverter, allowing you to shoot in the telephoto range of up to 600 mm (equivalent to 900 mm when using with an APS-C camera).
Lightweight and ideally balanced telephoto 300mm F2.8Main featuresG Master telephoto lens that captures decisive moments with high resolution and beautiful bokeh
Incorporating Sony’s cutting-edge technology, the G Master’s high-resolution performance and beautiful bokeh make the subject stand out clearly and precise AF captures decisive moments such as sports, news reports, events, and wildlife photography. An innovative optical design that includes three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element is effectively placed to suppress chromatic aberration and achieve high resolution and contrast across the entire frame. Outstanding resolution and contrast are maintained right out to the image edges, which also allows for more flexible cropping and editing.
Breathtaking G Master resolution
Gorgeous, creamy bokeh that is a hallmark of G Master design ideally complements the lens’s 300 mm focal length and F2.8 maximum aperture, allowing the use of narrow depth of field to make subjects stand out from the background. Each lens is individually calibrated during manufacture to optimise bokeh quality. An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism contributes to smooth ball bokeh.
Beautiful bokeh brings subjects to the foreHigh-performance AF that captures dynamic moments and high-speed continuous shooting with AE/AF tracking up to 120 frames per second2
The combination of two latest XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and control algorithms provides high-speed, high-precision, and low-vibration AF performance. When combined with the simultaneously announced Alpha 9 III, it enables high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to 120 frames per second. This allows you to capture dynamic subjects without missing a moment’s opportunity, even when shooting scenes where the subject moves quickly, such as sports or animals, or scenes where the subject moves erratically, such as at events. In addition, high AF performance is demonstrated even when the separately sold teleconverter3 is attached.
Fast, precise AF is also quiet and low in vibrationHigh-speed continuous shooting with fast, precise AF/AEHigh AF tracking performance with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconvertersExceptional mobility and comfortable operability that support professionals in the field
Extensive weight reduction measures make FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS the lightest in its class1, at approximately 1470g (excluding tripod mount) and has been designed with consideration to weight balance. The internal lens barrel uses durable magnesium alloy to achieve both high robustness and light weight. The weight is not concentrated at the front of the lens barrel, making it highly stable and allows for agile and accurate panning while handheld shooting. In addition, MODE3, which provides enhanced viewfinder stability and optimises the image stabilisation algorithm, allows you to accurately capture dynamic scenes.
The lightest in its class2 at 1 470 grams (51.9 oz.)3Built-in Optical SteadyShot
In addition, when using with the Alpha 9 III, you can assign “preset focus” to the function ring that allows you to instantly adjust the focus to any position. Furthermore, the camera features comfortable operability that supports professional shooting, including focus hold buttons placed in four locations that allow you to assign your favorite functions from the camera body.

Next Generation Alpha 9 III captures all decisive moments with up to 120 frames per second high-speed shooting, distortion-free and blackout-free images, flash sync at all shooting speeds and much, much more
Sony today unveiled the revolutionary new Alpha 9 III camera, which features the world’s first1 full-frame global shutter picture sensor.
The impressive new global shutter full-frame image sensor enables the camera to shoot at burst speeds at up to 120 fps with no distortion or camera blackout. By combining this innovative sensor with Sony’s most advanced AF system to date – boasting AI autofocus with up to 120 times AF/AE focus calculations per second – as well as the ability to sync flash at all shooting speeds, the Alpha 9 III opens up a new world of possibilities for professional photographers to capture that decisive moment.
Up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second
Features of the Alpha 9 III
A new dimension of still image performance created by the world’s first1 global shutter image sensor
The new Alpha 9 III is equipped with a newly developed world’s first1 global shutter full frame stacked CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.6 effective megapixels and built-in memory, combined with the latest image processing engine BIONZ XR®. It achieves blackout-free Continuous Shooting Speed with AF/AE tracking of up to approximately 120 frames per second4. The new Alpha 9 III is equipped with high-density focal plane phase detection AF. A Designated AI processing unit uses Real-time Recognition AF (autofocus) to recognise a wide variety of subjects with high precision. By combining high-speed performance of up to 120 frames per second with highly accurate subject recognition performance, it is possible to easily photograph decisive scenes and moments that cannot be captured with the naked eye4. The AI processing unit in the Alpha 9 III supports movies as well as stills with accurate subject form and movement recognition, providing a significant improvement in human eye recognition performance with Real-time Recognition AF and Real-time Tracking automatically recognising, tracking, and focusing on the eyes of a specified subject. Shutter speed is freed from the limitations of conventional mechanical shutter image sensors and achieves a maximum shutter speed of 1/80000 second (1/16000 second during continuous shooting), making it possible to capture at high speed without any distortion. When a compatible Sony flash is attached, such as the HVL-F60RM2 and HVL-F46RM (sold separately), it is possible to synchronise the flash and take pictures at all shutter speeds up to 1/80000 second8. Previously, if the user released the shutter at a speed faster than the flash’s synchronisation speed, the amount of light would drop sharply, but with the full-speed flash synchronisation function, it’s now possible to photograph scenes that could not be easily captured with conventional technology. Also, when shooting stills or movies under LED lighting, the Hi Frequency Flicker function can significantly reduce high-frequency flicker problems by allowing the shutter speed to be finely adjusted to match the flicker frequency while viewing the monitor.

The Alpha 9 III features selectable release lag modes which allows the user to prioritise release lag or viewfinder/monitor display. The newly installed Pre-Capture function allows the user to go back up to 1 second and record the moment before pressing the shutter, a Continuous Shooting Speed Boost change during shooting, and enhanced burst stamina ensures that important moments are reliably captured due to a large buffer memory and increased overall system speed allow up to approximately 390 Fine JPEG images to be captured in one continuous 30 fps burst.
Capture essential moments with innovative high-speed burst support
Customisable focus areas have been expanded to include from XS to XL instead of the previous S, M, and L sizes. The Preset Focus/Zoom function allows preset focus and zoom settings to be memorised in the camera for quick recall when needed. In addition to the existing custom white balance frame size, the user can now select other sizes as needed which allows for fine white balance adjustment after an image has been composed. The Alpha 9 III has upgraded features such as the latest AF algorithms to achieve high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-5 in AF-S mode (ISO 100 equivalent, F2.0 lens), AF tracking for continuous shooting at F22 and a composite RAW shooting function that gives the ability to combine multiple consecutive images into a high-quality composite.

Sony expands its microphone line with the ECM-W3 and ECM-W3S wireless microphones, as well as the ECM-S1 wireless streaming microphone. These innovative microphones combine high-quality sound capture with a compact design. Sony’s ECM-W3, ECM-W3S, and ECM-S1 models enable video content makers to obtain exceptional audio recording in a variety of shooting settings.
The ECM-W3 has a two-channel receiver and two microphones and the ECM-W3S has a one-channel receiver and one microphone. Both the ECM-W3 and ECM-W3S are perfect for video content creators who work in a wide range of shooting scenarios such as Vlogs and interviews, where it allows you to easily record high-quality voices even when you are shooting away from the camera.
The ECM-W3 wireless microphone is an ideal solution for interviews and one-on-one conversations and the ECM-W3S microphone excels in capturing clear and articulate user voices for vloggers and video contents creators with a focus on delivering a natural organic sound. These microphones ensure exceptional sound pickup while effectively reducing noise. In addition to Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe compatibility with Sony cameras, compatibility is further enhanced through a USB Type-C® terminal and 3.5mm audio output which enables connections with a range of devices equipped with USB terminal and 3.5mm audio input such as cameras, smartphone, and PC etc. The microphone also comes equipped with a convenient charging case, allowing for hassle-free portability.
For professional videographers and video content creators who require top-notch audio quality for shoots, livestreams, and podcasts, the ECM-S1 microphone is the ultimate tool. The microphone has a compact and lightweight body and is equipped with three 14 mm large-diameter capsules tuned to capture human voices naturally and with high-quality sound. Its seamless connection to cameras, computers, and smartphones makes an indispensable asset for content creators seeking a dynamic and engaging audio-video experience. As audio is recorded directly to the camera via a wireless connection, “sound and video lag” that sometimes occurs when sound and video are input separately to a distribution device during live streaming does not occur, thus delay compensation is not required.
Sony’s ECM-W3, ECM-W3S, and ECM-S1 microphones embody the brand’s commitment to innovation and excellence. With these new offerings, Sony continues to push the boundaries of audio technology, empowering creators to achieve remarkable sound quality across various content creation avenues.
Main features of the “ECM-W3” and “ECM-W3S” wireless microphones
Achieves high-quality sound pickup with reduced noise
The ECM-W3 consists of a receiver and two microphones, and the ECM-W3S consists of a receiver and one microphone. By designing with sound quality in mind, Sony has achieved high-quality sound pickup with reduced noise.
Equipped with a noise-cut filter that effectively reduces harsh noise with digital signal processing, and a low-cut filter that reduces unwanted low-frequency noise such as wind, air conditioning, and vibration noise. In addition, the included windscreen reduces the noise generated when strong wind or breath hits the microphone, making it possible to record clear audio with interference from the ambient environment. Working together, the filters and windscreen results in less noise removal processing during post-production.
When connected to a Sony camera equipped with the Multi-Interface (MI) shoe, the ECM-W3 and ECM-W3S receiver is compatible with a digital audio interface, and the camera can then directly record the audio signal output. This enables superb sound recording with minimal noise interference. In addition, it is equipped with a safety function that suppresses sound distortion at high volumes, and an attenuator function that manually reduces the sound during high-volume recording. Both the “ECM-W3” and “ECM-W3S” deliver low power consumption, low latency, and high sound quality with Bluetooth 5.3 (Bluetooth Low Energy) and LC3Plus codec.
Enhanced convenience through versatile connectivity
MI Shoe support enables greater flexibility with battery-free and cable-free shooting. Power is supplied directly from the camera to the receiver, so there is no need to worry about running out of battery. It also has a USB Type-C® terminal, so it is possible to output digital audio (48kHz/24bit) from the receiver to a USB-connected smartphone or PC. In addition, it is equipped with a 3.5mm mini jack (stereo) audio output terminal, ensuring compatibility with cameras, PCs, IC recorders, etc., that do not have an MI shoe. In addition, a terminal protection holder/stand for the multi-interface foot is included and can be used as a microphone stand when attaching the receiver to equipment other than a camera or attached to a smartphone clamp as an adapter with screw holes.
Additionally, the microphone is equipped with a 3.5mm mini jack (monaural) which can be used as an external microphone input terminal. It can be used in combination with a lavalier microphone such as ECM-LV1, you are able to pick-up the subject’s voice while the microphone is hidden from view. The rechargeable microphone can be used continuously for up to 6 hours on a full charge.
Compact and lightweight, high portability with charging case included
The compact and lightweight microphone’s dimensions are 25.0mm x 52.5mm x 20.5mm (W/H/D) and weighs only 17g. The receiver is 32.0mm x 29.0mm x 50.0mm (W/H/D) and weighs 25g. Both the microphones and receivers can be used anywhere, anytime with ease. For added durability, the ECM-W3 and ECM-W3S are designed to be dustproof and moisture proof, which allows for worry-free outdoor usage.
In addition, the lightweight and portable charging case makes it possible to charge while on the move.
Main features of the wireless/streaming microphone “ECM-S1”
High-quality sound pickup performance and synchronization of sound and video by connecting to a camera
The ECM-S1 is equipped with three large-diameter (14mm) capsules that corresponds to three sound pickup modes: Uni-directional, Omni-directional and Stereo, providing high-quality sound pickup with high sensitivity, and wide frequency characteristics. The microphone’s intrinsic low noise levels and wide dynamic range allows for clear recording of even the softest sounds.
By tuning it to record human voices naturally and clearly, the microphone can capture realistic and rich textured sound during recording that is unique to streaming microphones. It also has a noise cut filter that effectively removes harsh noise through digital signal processing, and a low-cut filter that reduces unnecessary low-frequency noise such as wind, air conditioning, and vibration, thus reducing the effects of the surrounding environment. The ECM-S1 has a full range of functions that reduce noise and support high-quality sound pickup.
A new sound pickup style with a compact, lightweight housing and versatile connectivity
The ECM-S1 microphone is light, weighing just 157g, and compact at 63.0 mm x 137.5 mm x 63.0 mm(W/H/D) with an ultra-light and compact receiver that weighs 25g at 32 mm x 29 mm x 50 mm (W/H/D). The Bluetooth 5.3 (Bluetooth Low Energy) and LC3plus codec deliver low power consumption, low latency, and high sound quality. Using wireless connection allows for a recording style that remains unaffected by environmental conditions. You can also achieve a new level of sound pickup, enabling talks and singing accompanied by musical instruments to be recorded in high sound quality.
For connectivity, the receiver can be attached to a compatible camera via it’s MI Shoe. The microphone and receiver are equipped with USB Type-C® terminals that support 48 kHz/24-bit digital audio output. As a result, the microphone can record high quality sound in a variety of ways, such as connecting the microphone wirelessly to a PC or smartphone via the receiver’s USB or connecting the microphone directly to a PC or smartphone via USB. The receiver also has a 3.5mm mini jack (stereo) as an audio output terminal.
High operability that meets the needs of diverse creators
The microphone is equipped with an independent dial that adjusts the sound recording level. The ECM-S1’s audio input level volume can also be adjusted intuitively with the upper dial while checking the audio input level in real time with the indicator lamps. The built-in LINK lamp indicates the communication status between the microphone and receiver to prevent any missed recording.
When recording via a USB connection between the microphone and a PC or smartphone, headphones (commercially available) can be connected to the microphone’s headphone out jack to monitor the audio without involving the connected device. The headphone volume can also be adjusted with a short press of the dial on the bottom of the microphone. You can adjust the audio mixing ratio between the input volume level of the audio from the microphone and that of the audio from the computer or smartphone via the USB connection with the headphone volume/mixing ratio adjustment dial on the microphone.
The ECM-S1 and receiver each have a built-in battery for extended use. The receiver can also be used continuously with the support of direct power supply when connected to the camera’s MI Shoe or a USB Type-C® cable. The microphone can be used continuously for up to 13 hours when the battery is fully charged using a USB Type-C® cable.
In addition, a pop guard reduces popping noises that occurs when the speaker’s mouth is close to the microphone and their breath comes into direct contact with the microphone. This enables vocals, narration, and other audio to be recorded under optimal conditions. A stand that can be attached to the microphone is also included, allowing the microphone to stand without support while recording. The microphone angle can also be adjusted forward or backward. Alternatively, the stand can be removed when not in use and the 1/4” thread on the bottom of the microphone allows it to be mounted on a tripod or attached to a commercially available microphone arm.

BURANO combines outstanding cinematic images and exceptional mobility for single camera operators and small crews
Sony is thrilled to launch the new BURANO camera as part of the CineAlta portfolio, the company’s top brand of digital cinema cameras. The new BURANO has a sensor that matches the VENICE 2’s color science and is specifically tailored for single-camera operators and small crews. This camera combines great image quality with high mobility, and it is the world’s first PL-Mount digital cinema camera with in-body image stabilisation. Furthermore, the small housing incorporates, for the first time, a thinner-than-before electrically changeable ND filter structure as well as an optical image stabilisation mechanism, a technological achievement never before accomplished. When the PL lens mount is removed, the camera can be used with E-mount lenses and has fast hybrid AF and subject recognition AF, making it ideal for fast-moving subjects.
Main Features: Powerful 8.6K Full-Frame Sensor
Using the widely appreciated colour science of the VENICE cameras, BURANO features an 8.6K full-frame sensor that shares most of the VENICE 2 specifications enabling it to work alongside that camera in all types of productions. The sensor features dual base ISO of 800 and 3200 and 16 stops[i] of latitude to produce stunning images even in the most challenging lighting conditions.
Like all cameras in Sony’s full-frame Cinema Line, BURANO will have the ability to shoot at full-frame, Super 35, and also features a de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses. It can film at frame rates including up to 8K at 30 frames per second, 6K at 60 frames per second or 4K at 120 frames per second[ii].
BURANO features a compact and lightweight body for high mobility, approximately 32mm shorter and 1.4kg lighter than the VENICE 2 camera. BURANO is housed in a rugged magnesium chassis, making it suitable for filming in the most challenging environments. The camera and accessory packaging bags materials are made primarily of plant-based cellulose[iii] instead of plastic as part of Sony’s efforts to be environmentally conscious. Moreover, a moulded pulp cushion is used on the camera as the cushioning material, thus not using expanded polystyrene.
Built In Optical Image Stabilisation
BURANO is the world’s first digital cinema camera with PL-mount to support in-body image stabilisation. With a newly developed image stabilisation mechanism and control algorithm that leverages the advanced image stabilisation technology cultivated in the Alpha™ series of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, unwanted camera shake, such as movement from shooting handheld or walking, can be corrected when shooting with an E-mount or PL-mount lens.
Diagram showing 5-axis image stabilisation for an e-mount lens compensating for pitch, yaw and roll
Variable ND Filter for added control and exposure optimisation.
BURANO is equipped with an electronic variable ND filter from 0.6 to 2.1, enabling easy adjustments in various lighting conditions. In addition, the electronic variable ND filter allows control of the depth of field with the iris and adjusts to the optimum exposure without changing the depth of field.
E-mount lenses for an increased choice
More than 70 E-mount lenses can use the excellent image stabilisation function cultivated with Alpha™, as well as Fast Hybrid AF that combines the benefits of phase detection and contrast detection method and are also compatible with high-precision Subject Recognition AF using AI. Using an E-mount lens further reduces the weight and size of the camera.
Updated Body Design for greater ergonomics
BURANO also includes design improvements based on feedback from the filmmaking community. For example, all menu buttons are positioned on the camera operator’s side. Additionally, tally lamps are placed in three locations to make it easier for the surrounding crew to check the shooting status. The 3.5-inch multi-function LCD monitor can be used as a viewfinder, for touch focus, or menu control. The BURANO also comes equipped with an optional robust T-handle, viewfinder arm, two 3-pin XLR audio inputs, and a headphone terminal (stereo minijack), convenient for solo operation.
Recording Formats for added workflow flexibility.
The BURANO can record from HD to 8K depending on the resolution, aspect ratio, and codec. BURANO supports multiple internal recording formats, such as the new XAVC H™ for 8K, which uses the MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 high compression efficiency codec. Other recording formats include XAVC and X-OCN LT. X-OCN is Sony’s original compressed RAW format that can capture information shot with 16-bit linear data, which gives filmmakers more freedom in post for colour grading. X-OCN LT can reduce file transfer time and storage size load, making post-production workflows more efficient than standard versions of RAW data.
BURANO is also equipped with two new CF express Type B memory card slots and supports VPG400, which can sustain high bitrate writing of video data, including X-OCN LT 8K. Sony will also be releasing new compatible CFexpress Type B memory cards, CEB-G1920T (1920 GB)/ CEB-G960T (960 GB).
Versatile and Efficient Production Ecosystem
BURANO supports various log recording modes including S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut.Cine, which are colour spaces that cover a colour gamut exceeding BT.2020 and DCI-P3. BURANO can reproduce the same colour as all cameras in Sony’s Cinema Line, including the VENICE 2. This allows filmmakers to match cameras within the line.
BURANO comes with four new cinematic looks[iv]: Warm, Cool, Vintage, Teal, and Orange, in addition to supporting industry standard s709 and 709 (800%) Look Up Tables (LUTs).
Furthermore, like the VENICE series amongst others, BURANO can be used for virtual production using large screen LED displays such as Sony’s Crystal LED VERONA. The camera also features gen-lock.
Sony will be releasing separately the GP-VR100 Grip remote control for the BURANO’s main unit, to control the zoom lever and recording start / stop button, particularly useful in solo shooting set ups.
BURANO will support the S700 protocol over ethernet and a 1.5x de-squeeze display function when using anamorphic lens in July 2024 or later. Further updates based on user feedback and suggestions will be rolled out in the future[v].
