  • The Evolution of Direct Selling: From Door-to-Door to Digital in Malaysia

The Evolution of Direct Selling: From Door-to-Door to Digital in Malaysia

Herbalife, a leading global health and wellness company, has unveiled encouraging findings from its latest Asia Pacific Direct Selling Survey, highlighting Malaysia as one of the region’s most informed and trust-driven markets when it comes to direct selling. According to the survey, an impressive 94% of Malaysian respondents correctly identified direct selling as a method of selling goods or services directly to consumers through personal contact without a permanent retail location — a rate among the highest across the Asia Pacific region.

In addition to demonstrating a strong grasp of the industry’s fundamentals, Malaysians also showed high awareness of direct selling regulations. More than 9 in 10 respondents acknowledged the existence of consumer protection laws and industry regulations, as well as self-regulatory practices. Trust in the direct selling sector remains high, with nearly 7 in 10 Malaysians (69%) expressing confidence in the model. This places Malaysia among the top three in the region, trailing only the Philippines (81%) and Vietnam (70%).

Steven Chin, Senior Director and General Manager of Herbalife Malaysia and Singapore, noted that these positive perceptions reflect the direct selling industry’s consistent efforts to uphold ethical standards and educate the public. “The strong awareness and trust findings reflect the continuous efforts by industry players to reinforce public confidence through ethical business practices and education of our compliance standards,” Chin said. He added that with a projected industry growth of 7.4% reaching RM34.4 billion in 2024, direct selling continues to present a viable entrepreneurial path for many Malaysians.

Notably, the survey also revealed that younger Malaysians are more likely to trust direct selling. Among Gen Z respondents, 74% expressed trust in the model, compared to 68% among Millennials and Gen Xers. Key factors influencing consumer trust include a company’s proven quality control measures (55%), its reputation as a well-known brand (50%), and the length of time it has been in operation (36%).

Gender-specific insights also emerged from the study. Malaysian women are more likely to be drawn to direct selling for its flexibility, with 29% citing flexible working hours as a key motivator, compared to 24% of men. Earning supplemental income (36%) and being their own boss (33%) were also among the top reasons women were attracted to direct selling. Furthermore, 39% of female respondents saw direct selling as a fitting opportunity for homemakers, compared to 34% of male respondents.

Despite the optimism, the survey highlighted certain concerns, particularly around financial risks if products are unsold. To address this, over half of the respondents said they expect strong support systems — both from within the direct selling community (54%) and from the companies themselves (52%). Additionally, 42% emphasized the importance of support from family and friends, underscoring the community-oriented nature of the business.

Chin emphasized the role of companies like Herbalife in reducing these risks through training and support. “We equip our independent distributors with expert-led training on health, nutrition, and our products, ensuring they can confidently guide customers,” he said. “Beyond training, we foster a supportive community with personalised guidance and dedicated customer service.” With a global network of over two million entrepreneurs, Herbalife continues to provide the resources and mentorship necessary for success in the evolving landscape of direct selling.

The survey, conducted in late 2023, polled 8,000 respondents across eight Asia Pacific markets: Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

    Pandangan

  • RAAQUU, A LOCAL ARTISANAL BRAND TAKING A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH ABOUT ANCIENT JAPANESE POTTERY TECHNIQUES PRODUCING WORLD-CLASS CERAMIC ART

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 November 2023 –About 15 years ago when Adil Abdul Ghani first polished Raku pottery while studying ceramics training program in Japan. He was immediately taken by the piece and found himself dig deep into the process of its creation called Raku – a firing technique for pottery that Its origins may be linked to the art of the ancient Japanese tea ceremony. Since then, Adil taking various bold steps to hone his expertise in all things Raku brings the establishment of a new company called RAAQUU CERAMIC ART (RAAQUU) in 2020.

Within three years, RAAQUU has achieved a significant number of accomplishments. Adil’s brand of Raku with its five different type of finishes, namely full-copper matte, half-copper matte, smoked, carbon half-copper matte and obvara (a slightly varied technique of firing), has proven to be a hit both locally and internationally. In 2022 itself, RAAQUU recorded an unprecedented sales of more than RM1 million in ceramic art – gaining worldwide attention both online and offline in the process.

According to Adil, “Raku ceramics are special because of the unpredictability of its firing technique. Just like our tagline, ‘Painted By Fire’, Raku firing is done in an extremely hot kiln and then removed while the ceramic piece is still red-hot or molten. Immediately after coming out of the kiln, the ceramic piece is then placed in a reduction chamber filled with sawdust or paper. The extreme heat from the ceramic piece then ignites the combustible material in the reduction chamber, which is then sealed for a while.”

Adil continue to explain that what happens inside the reduction chamber is the key to the unique and unpredictable colours of each Raku ceramic piece. “At RAAQUU, each ceramic piece are different and cannot be reproduced. This makes each piece a unique work of art with its own story to tell. It is the main factor that drives the interest towards RAAQUU and made it into a coveted collector’s item.”

RAAQUU’s products ranges from miniature vases that you could slip into your pocket, to experimental sculptural pottery pieces from its Life Magnified collection created by Adil as the brand’s Creative Director and Ceramicist. The variety of products especially the one-of-a-kind sculptures are created to spark interest on RAAQUU and create a talkability and shareability factor, which is extremely important in this day and age.

They are made at RAAQUU’s operations base at Ara Damansara where the design studio and management office are also located. Raw materials, mainly clays, are ethically sourced from Mukim Sayong in Perak, the birthplace of another design marvel, our very own ‘labu Sayong’ or ‘water calabash’, a Malay traditional earthenware water container. “I feel that the merge between the historical elements of Malaysia and Japan where local crafts are concerned has in itself taken RAAQUU to another level of distinction and gravitas”, quips Adil on another noteworthy feature of RAAQUU.

Adil is currently busy preparing for RAAQUU’s first solo exhibition that is scheduled for mid January 2024. “We hope to show at least 20 large-scale sculptural pieces that have never been seen, and we will also be introducing our accessory items too. This is on top of RAAQUU’s most popular contemporary and functional home decoration products. For now, I must say that the RAAQUU team is fired up for our next phase of expansion. My focus is of course to ensure that RAAQUU maintains its level of artistry. We are in consistent R&D mode – researching and experimenting on how we could make our products better while still honouring the tradition and culture from which these incredible pieces came from”. He concluded, “In 2024, I am looking at collaborating with designers from any discipline to create other exciting and unique products for RAAQUU, and are keen to explore new partnerships especially in the retail industry. So far, RAAQUU’s partnerships with The Datai in Langkawi, FERN Batik Collective and Gudang have created various positive impact to the brand”, says Adil enthusiastically.

RAAQUU currently ships to 32 countries worldwide and can be purchased online via www.raaquu.com where you can also find other in-depth information on the brand. RAAQUU is also available on Etsy, Amazon, Patreon etc. Terms and conditions apply.

  • This weekend, from September 29 through October 1, 20 of the most popular food vendors will congregate for the Top Viral Food Festival, which is put on by Friedchilies and Sunway Putra Mall.

FriedChillies and Sunway Putra Mall will host a 3-day food festival honoring the beautiful world of viral cuisine, following the hugely popular Nasi Kandaq Fest. Food lovers are ready for another surprise. The Top Viral Food Festival 2023 (TVFF 2023) will bring together some of the most viral vendors on social media, offering everything from mouthwatering brisket to donut-pizzas to thirst-quenching drinks. This is in contrast to the Nasi Kandaq Fest, where everything is focused on celebrating nasi kandar and its dishes.

“It is undeniable in recent years, there has been some really innovative food being sold via social media. The pandemic and the lockdown has given people time to experiment and also find different ways to make a living,” says Adly Rizal, CEO of FriedChillies. “Other than presenting to Malaysians a quality food event that everyone can enjoy, this is also our way to support these businesses, and encourage them towards creating a sustainable business in the future. We expect a fun, family crowd over the weekend because, alongside all the delicious food on offer, we also have a lot of activities planned.”

The vendors joining TVFF 2023 are brands that are on top at the moment and are sought after by foodies and trend seekers. Among the vendors are well-loved brands like Beard Brothers BBQ and TanjakCrew as well as Suka Dessert and Donut Viral Opah who have been the talk of the town since 2021. Check out the list below for the 20 viral vendors participating in the festival and the food items they have on offer.

“We were overwhelmed by the support for the Nasi Kandaq Fest. This means that food is truly a unifying factor for people from all walks of life to come together,” says Tan Ai Vee, Head of Marketing, Sunway Putra Mall. “We hope to continue doing great events like TVFF in Sunway Putra Mall where people can eat, drink and be merry despite rain or shine in our mall. It truly is in line with our vision that malls are more than just a shopping experience, it’s where communities gather for connection and social activities,” she smiles.

FriedChillies, who are the people behind wildly popular food events like I Eat Nasi Lemak and Ayam Lejen often find interesting venues to act as hosts. Ayam Lejen was held at the Ara Damansara LRT Station. Meanwhile, I Eat Burgers was a 12-hours burger insanity event held at a football field in PJ, where 20 burger legends from Ramli Burger stalls to gourmet eateries served up the juiciest burgers to food fans.

Sunway Putra Mall has lined up a list of entertaining pocket events to add to the festivities. There will be buskers to serenade visitors and eating competitions scheduled, as well as a Cosplay Pose Competition. The festival expects about 50-60 cosplay enthusiasts to take part in the competition which will run for about two hours. This competition will be judged by legendary local figures in the scene, Mr. Azamcos (The Ultimate Cosplayer), Mr. Din (LoL Cosplay) and Mr. Adam John.

“Sunway Putra Mall is a perfect partner because they truly love their space and the location can’t be more ideal with numerous public transports nearby and easy access to e-hailing services. The vibe during the nasi kandaq event was cool because you truly felt you were right smack in the middle of a cityscape while enjoying mouth-watering food. So come join us this weekend starting from 29 September 2023 (Friday) all the way to 1 October 2023 (Sunday) to eat and to support our local heroes.,” adds Adly.

This surau construction project was completed with the collaboration of the Ministry of  Defense (MINDEF), the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), and the Malaysian Zoological  Society. The project’s goal was to provide a fully equipped, comfortable, and easily  accessible place of worship for the visitors and staff of Zoo Negara. Construction works  began on 16 January and completed on 16 March 2023. The newly rebuilt surau opened  on 29 June, coinciding with the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday.

  • IBU NAKHODA HIDUP 2023 CELEBRATES EMPOWERED MOTHER ENTREPRENEURS: EMPOWERING DREAMS, IGNITING SUCCESS

The Ibu Nakhoda Hidup 2023 initiative has successfully concluded, according to WOMEN:girls, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Malaysia and Singapore, and MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Berhad (MYDIN). The concluding event, which was held at the MYDIN headquarters in Subang Jaya, was a resounding monument to these prestigious organizations’ successful commitment to supporting and economically strengthening women entrepreneurs throughout the country.

The Ibu Nakhoda Hidup programme, launched in 2015, stands as a beacon of empowerment,  equipping enterprising mother entrepreneurs with the essential tools, knowledge, and unwavering  confidence to flourish amidst the ever-evolving business landscape, enriching their families and  broader communities.

“Partnerships serve as the cornerstone of sustainable development, and we are immensely  gratified to rekindle our collaboration with Procter & Gamble (P&G) and MYDIN to relaunch the Ibu  Nakhoda Hidup programme, following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This programme exemplifies the unyielding values of our esteemed partners. At WOMEN: girls, we understand that  empowering mother entrepreneurs doesn’t just uplift communities, it secures the future for  generations to come,” declared Izza Izelan, Executive Director of WOMEN: girls, a dynamic non-governmental organisation committed to nurturing women into role models and children into  change agents.

The Ibu Nakhoda Hidup initiative is underpinned by the ‘Hulurkan Harapan’ Fund, a visionary fund  jointly established by P&G and MYDIN a decade ago to champion social initiatives endorsed by  P&G. Each RM10 spent on P&G products at MYDIN Hypermarkets and the Roadshow, from its  inception in May until June this year, contributed 5 cents to this impactful fund, culminating in an  impressive RM95,000 total collection. Through this resource, every mother entrepreneur is  uniquely supported with tailored aid, whether in the form of goods, services, equipment, or  materials essential to elevate their entrepreneurial pursuits.

Following a meticulous evaluation of 104 mothers interviewed across diverse locations, including  Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Terengganu, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Melaka, Kelantan, Sabah,  and Sarawak, six exceptional mother entrepreneurs have been chosen as recipients of the 2023  programme.

The six include Chendra Anak Bahak, a Kuching-native food entrepreneur pioneering traditional  Borneo cuisine in Peninsular Malaysia; Yenny Jamrut, a Sabahan cendol artisan poised for  innovative expansion; Mariani Idris, an agriculture enthusiast from Kuching with over two decades  of plant and fertiliser expertise; Masinah, a Sabah-based purveyor of salted fish and dried shrimps  with aspirations of international exports; Azmira Ali, a Sambal Penyet maven expanding her sambal-making enterprise; and Paremala Vanni, a bakery proprietor and certified baking instructor  committed to widening her impact through extended baking classes.

P&G’s relentless commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs and sparking transformative  change resonates profoundly through its steadfast endorsement of this initiative. Mr. Nantha  Kumaran Kalimuthu, Country Manager of P&G Malaysia and Singapore, asserted, “Rooted in a  legacy of innovation and progressive change, P&G acknowledges women’s paramount role in  propelling economic advancement. Through strategic collaborations like the Ibu Nakhoda Hidup  programme, P&G leverages its extensive expertise and resources, bestowing financial backing  and invaluable upskilling prospects. By equipping aspiring mother entrepreneurs with the skills to  expand their enterprises, we aspire to empower these women to establish, flourish, and amplify  their earnings, creating fresh job opportunities within their communities. Their triumph will stand as  a model for fellow women, engendering a virtuous cycle of reinvestment in families and  communities. This dedicated commitment to nurturing and elevating women entrepreneurs  epitomises P&G’s core principles and augments its enduring influence on societies and  economies.”

Datuk Wira (Dr) Hj. Ameer Ali Bin Mydin, Executive Director of MYDIN, declared, “MYDIN proudly  continues its collaborative journey with P&G Malaysia and Singapore and WOMEN:girls in  nurturing and enriching maternal entrepreneurial prowess through the Ibu Nakhoda Hidup  programme. Since its inception in 1957, MYDIN has consistently championed its role as an  economic catalyst and avenue for opportunity. Embracing the ethos of ‘Why Pay More? Buy at  Wholesale Prices!’, MYDIN extends beyond merely delivering quality goods; it fosters an  environment where burgeoning women entrepreneurs can illuminate. Initiatives like this mirror  MYDIN’s commitment to encouraging and equipping mother entrepreneurs with exposure,  resources, and nurturing conditions to flourish. In championing women’s aspirations, MYDIN  significantly contributes to a more comprehensive and thriving society, embodying an unwavering  allegiance to women’s empowerment and economic advancement.”

The Ibu Nakhoda Hidup 2023 programme once again epitomises the unswerving dedication of  WOMEN:girls, P&G, and MYDIN, accentuating their shared resolve to empower women  entrepreneurs, kindle economic growth, and forge an enduring impact within Malaysian  communities. From ice cream vendors to music tutors, this initiative has already empowered 25  mother entrepreneurs spanning Malaysia, surmounting barriers to business accomplishment and  enriching their families and communities.

The closing ceremony of Ibu Nakhoda Hidup 2023 radiates a beacon of aspiration, empowerment,  and collaboration, underscoring the collective commitment of WOMEN:girls, P&G, and MYDIN in  steering meaningful transformation within Malaysia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

  • NEW WAVES OF FORTITUDE ARE INTRODUCED BY MyCEB AT THE MALAYSIA BUSINESS EVENTS WEEK 2023

The Malaysia Business Events Week (MBEW) 2023 was once again successfully organized by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). The six-day event, which was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (The Centre), brought together 400 business event professionals and offered them insights and expertise through panel discussions, seminars, training sessions, forums, and CSR efforts.

The highlight of MBEW 2023 was the launch of the MyTripleE support programme under MyCEB’s Meet in Malaysia campaign, aimed at attracting regional and international business events to Malaysia while bolstering the domestic market. The programme’s three components, Excel, Elevate, and Enliven, provide financial and non-financial support to enhance the execution of world-class business events and cater to various target market segments that include convention, exhibition, as well as corporate meetings and incentives.

MyTripleE programme is based on a three-pronged strategy designed to cover three identified target market segments. It covers international market development as part of our ongoing portfolio and further encourages the expansion of local events and meetings to foster the spirit of unity and harmony amongst Malaysians. Additionally, MyTripleE also targets to emphasize on cultural elements and to serve as an enhancement of governmental Business Events,” explained Datuk Hajah Saraya Arbi, Interim Chairman of MyCEB.

She expressed excitement about the programme’s comprehensive coverage and its role in supporting stakeholders by addressing industry challenges. By 2030, business events are expected to attract 5.9 million delegates, contributing to RM42.12 billion in estimated economic impact whilst creating an estimated 25,833 total employment if everything goes according to the plan including budget allocation from government.

Present also to officiate MBEW 2023 was YBhg. Datuk Zamri Mat Zain, Deputy Secretary General (Tourism), Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Malaysia on behalf of YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Malaysia commented, “I commend MyCEB for their tremendous work done not only for this event, but also the entire business events industry. Time after time, MyCEB has proven that they are indeed the pillar of this industry and continues to lead all Malaysian players in the global business events arena. As of August 2023, MyCEB has secured 149 business events under its belt that are happening throughout the year. These events will contribute to an estimated economic impact of RM2.4 billion and welcoming around 494,015 delegates to the country. These figures are expected to grow over time, signaling a promising upturn and indicating that the business events industry is steadily picking up pace for recovery.”

The Deputy Secretary General (Tourism) reaffirmed, “MOTAC is proactively supporting business events activities and welcome bigger collaborations with even non-industry parties including non-government organisations to achieve the next phase of growth for this sector. I look forward to more strong prospects for Malaysia as we step closer to Visit Malaysia Year”.

“Guiding the path to success at MBEW 2023 has been an honor and a privilege. I am immensely proud of the strides we’ve taken. Managing a session topic from its inception, curating content, and inviting thought leaders to the stage, it’s been a journey of shaping impactful discussions. Equally important, nurturing the Future Leaders Programme on 23 August has been a true highlight. Seeing emerging talents blossom and contribute energizes our commitment to the industry’s growth. MBEW stands as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and the power of collective progress. I am also very happy to see MyCEB’s continuous efforts in growing the industry through creative and practical initiatives such as the latest MyTripleE. I am confident it will be of great boost to our business, and I look forward to the continued elevation of the business events landscape,” shared Francis Teo, President of Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS)

Apart from future-proofing topics, MBEW featured signature programmes, including the exclusive business-to-business session ‘BE Exchange’, providing insight on future trends and product innovations. Workshops and sessions by esteemed organisations like Malaysian Society of Association Executives (MSAE), International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), and Simpleview addressed collaboration, association management, generative AI for business events, and training.

With sustainability incorporated in the event, MBEW 2023’s MyCSR initiatives involved collaborations with the National Blood Centre for a blood donation drive and a tree planting activity that involves Tourism Selangor, Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS), Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), MACEOS, and Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB).
